Create diagrams and flowcharts with Dia
One of my aims for PhDadvice.com is to highlight web tools and software tools that are likely to be useful to PhD students. People working in different fields will have different specific tasks that need very specific pieces of software. However, there are also more general tasks that PhD students in any field need to do, and for which software tools and web tools can be useful. For example, anyone doing a PhD needs to write large documents and manage their time.
Another general task that’s likely to be necessary in many fields is drawing diagrams, and for this I want to suggest the open-source program Dia. A diagram in this sense can refer to many things; over the course of my PhD I’ve used Dia to make
- Flowcharts
- Figures for publication in journals
- Hierarchical mind maps
- Gantt charts
- Database diagrams
- Network diagrams
- Software designs
Dia works on an objects + connectors principle, which means that you can connect different items together (as in a flowchart, for example) then move them around on the page to find a suitable layout. A whole bunch of templates are included in Dia, including ones for flowcharts, circuits, logic gates and lots of others who’s use I don’t have a clue about. The software runs on Linux and Windows and you can download it here. There’s a nice tutorial here.
Most of the jobs I mentioned above could have been done in any vector drawing software, but if the job can be done with a few simple shapes, Dia is much easier to use and gets the job done fast. It’s a nice example of a program that does one job and does it well; a common philosophy in the open-source world. I recommend you give it a try next time you need something drawn out.
