Find clichés in your writing
Here’s an interesting web tool; the Cliche Finder, which got me thinking about the use of clichés in academic writing. The tool is very simple to use, just copy and paste your text into the box and click the button, and any clichés will be highlighted red.
Technical and scientific writing is generally free from clichés - using the tool to scan a couple of my papers didn’t yield any matches. However, I have noticed a tendency for academics to resort to clichés when writing about their work for the general public. Perhaps it’s because we tend to rely a lot on analogies, which can often turn into clichés if you’re not careful.
Writing for the general public is an important skill, since at some point you’re likely to have to explain your work to people outside your field. Also, many funding applications require that you write a non-technical summary of your proposals, so it’s important to work on your non-technical writing style as well as more formal styles. There are several suggestions in my article on improving your writing with other projects that would be useful for this.
